Law and Order: Mackenzie Heights
To further underline my thoughts that the city is becoming one big crime ridden flaming hellhole (well, I don't really think that but it sure sounds dramatic doesn't it?) today we had a full fledged police take down in our driveway.
My mom first noticed a couple of cop cars parked at the neighbours house right behind ours. There was also a woman in civilian clothes standing in the lane across the street, hiding and peering around the corner. Dad, who was outside doing some work acknowledged her when she walked by but she didn't say anything. She was later replaced by another cop in uniform who also stood and peered around the corner. Our interest raised, we looked to see if we could tell just who and what they were investigating. They seemed to be focusing on our neighbour's house. Our neighbours are new and have only been in there for a couple of months so we don't really know them.
Not a lot happened for a while. The undercover woman walked up the street carrying something. She was wearing those blue medical gloves that cops on TV always put on so dramatically. I guess she had been doing some investigating. The uniformed cop disappeared for a bit and then returned to his post. Things seemed to be pretty quiet.
All of a sudden there was the sound of a siren whooping in short bursts as two cop cars roared up the street and came to a stop just beside our driveway. One had come from the lane and that was the cop who had been at his post, the other came from somewhere else. Both had their lights flashing but only used the siren for those short staccato bursts. By the time I got to the window to see what was going on, the cops in the lead car both had their guns drawn and were barking orders to the man in the car, my neighbour. The other cops, two undercover females slowly joined the action. The man dropped the keys to the car out the window and slowly got out. They made him do the hands in the air walk backwards routine until he was closer to them. Then the others moved in and when he was down flat on the ground they handcufffed and searched him. The first pair of cops did a quick search of his Porsche Boxster and then returned to him. After searching him they let him sit there on the ground while they questioned him for the next 15 minutes.
What we got from the lead cop was that it was a domestic dispute, that he had threatened his girlfriend and that he had guns in the house. He's an American so he may or may not be allowed to stay in the country, I suppose depending on the rest of his record. So things mellowed out for a while and once the paddywagon came and they put him inside, the whole situation seemed to wrap up. A tow truck came and took away the Porsche. A bit later I looked out and they were all gone so I assume that'll be all for today.
I don't think I've ever seen the cops do a full, weapons out, take down. At least, not in this area. We've seen them around from time to time, sometimes sneaking about in some sort of covert action, but usually things are pretty quiet.
I wasn't trying to turn this blog into a police blotter but that's just the way things are going this week. Hopefully that'll be it for now.
Ironically, my former neighbour, who lived in the house for 30 years or so, was an ex-RCMP.
But things change and now I can use that old joke line: "There goes the neighbourhood."
