Water Fountain

A couple of weeks ago on the way to school I saw an honest to goodness movie moment.
Well, not a real movie moment with cameras and all that but a situation that looked like it came right out of a movie.
While trying to make some time heading south on Fraser Street I noticed a slowdown up ahead. As there is construction on virtually every street in town right now I wasn’t surprised. But then I saw the flashing lights. Accident? Police incident? Starbucks opening another store?
As I got to Twentieth and Fraser I noticed a van sideways on the other side of the street with a smashed in front. A few feet away was another car, up on the curb and the focus of all the attention. (And no, it wasn’t a Ford Focus but that would’ve been good if it was)
I quickly surmised that the car or truck had been trying to pull out or cross Fraser and the other vehicle slammed into it with extreme prejudice. The car was sent flying off the road, nailed the fire hydrant square on and let loose a Hollywood style fountain of water. The gusher was at least six feet in the air or more. It was hard to tell but seemed to be quite high. It was above the car by a couple of feet. I don’t know how long it had been going on but there was at least three cop cars on the scene, a fire truck or two, and a city works crew. All of these guys were standing around trying to figure out what to do. Probably they thought it looked pretty cool too. The cars involved were damaged from the collision but the one underneath the fountain was going to be seriously damp by the end of the day. There was a lot of water pouring out of that thing.
I had to get to school so I thanked the traffic gods that the accident happened on the other side of the street and continued past the line of backed up cars.
In the following days I’ve noticed the hydrant is still lying on its side and they haven’t fixed it yet. They have managed to secure the area with yellow tape.
So I guess now I have to say the cliché about movie accidents is somewhat true, as I’ve seen it with my own eyes. Now I want to see it again because in real life it’s pretty cool.
